What's included in the Eye10 Backlink Checker tool?

General features

Total backlinks

Get instant, clear-cut answers about the number of backlinks your website has.

Your total backlinks are displayed as a numerical figure at the top of the page. As with all Eye10 data, you can export this information as a CSV (spreadsheet) or as a PDF.

When using Eye10’s Backlink Monitor, uploading a spreadsheet is one of the ways you can find out further information about the status of each backlink. You may also want to save the data for further reference, especially when looking to see how your SEO strategy has improved over the course of your Eye10 subscription.

Referring domains

See the total number of unique domains that refer to your website. The higher the better, as individual domains referring to your website are seen as more valuable than the same website linking to your website hundreds of times.

If you check the section ‘link from the page URL’, you can see a full list of where your backlinks originate as well as the URL. You’ll discover the page title, the link used, if any anchor text has been used, the domain rank of the referring website, and the last time somebody clicked the link.

For paid backlinks, you can also see whether the content has been displayed and linked to as promised, i.e., has the correct anchor text been used? Plus, if the intended page has been linked as expected or if the content links to a different page. We recommend studying this information to learn why people are linking to your website, so you can produce similar results in the future by catering to your audience.

Referring links attributes

Links may have attributes attached to them, meaning search engines treat those links slightly differently.

Some examples of link attributes include UGC (User-Generated Content), bookmark, no-follow, do-follow, no-opener, and no-referrer.

It’s always a good idea to check the status of your backlinks to ensure the right type of content is pointing at your website so that it offers a genuine benefit to your SEO strategy.

Referring links to platform types

While it’s easy to think of all websites as the same, they are anything but in terms of content, niche, and type. Therefore, referring links platform types tells you more about the source of a particular backlink.

Some examples of referring link platforms include CMS, blogs, and e-commerce websites.

Understanding what type of platforms are linking to your content can be incredibly insightful. Eye10 will display a list of referring link platform types and give many backlinks for each category.

Referring links to semantic locations

Referring links to semantic locations may sound confusing for those new to SEO. So, the best way to think about this category is the link position on the page, i.e., yes, you have a backlink on that page, but where has the link to your website actually been placed on that page?

The position of your link on a page matters for SEO because its location will determine how many impressions and clicks it receives.

Some of the semantic locations Eye10 may find include nav, main, aside, figure, footer, header, article, or a section. The message ‘no semantic location’ will be displayed where a semantic location cannot be detected.

Referring links ID

Referring links ID relates to the domain suffix (also known as domain extensions) of your backlinks, i.e., .com, .org, .net, and so on.

You might not realize it, but the domain suffix of your backlinks can affect your SEO. This is due to some suffixes having high link juice potential and others being seen as spam in the eyes of Google. When paying for backlinks in particular (i.e., through guest posting), you need to be very careful to ensure the domain has a high authority rating to avoid such issues.

So, what makes a great referring link ID? Generally, most standard domain suffixes including .com, are reputable. In addition, backlinks from .gov and .edu can do remarkable things for your off-page SEO due to the reputation of such sites.

It tends to be newer domain suffixes created after 2015 that can appear as spam, especially the likes of .loan, .tk, .fit, .gq, .ga and .ml.

You can see a list of the domain suffixes that link to your website through Backlink Checker, which can instantly help to determine whether your backlinks are of genuine benefit to your website or not.

Anchor

Anchor refers to whether anchor text has been used for the backlink. If so, what is the anchor text?

Let’s rewind for those who are new to SEO. Anchor text is an SEO technique that involves making a link out of a related keyword or phrase. So, imagine if we were creating a link to our homepage using anchor text, we’d write something like Eye10 homepage.

The link describes precisely where the link points to and is a crawlable aspect of the website for search engines.

For paid backlinks, you may have agreed on anchor text before commissioning the piece. For example, if a window company paid for a sponsored post, the anchor text linking to their website could be ‘double glazing’ or ‘window installers near me’.

So, when using Eye10’s Backlink Checker, you can see whether these guidelines have been followed or not to ensure your off-page SEO strategy is reaching its potential.

For organic backlinks, using anchor text by other users can be very helpful, as it determines the types of words and phrases people associate with your content. From there, if you notice any trends, you can look to further optimize your page or even create new content that features these keywords.

Rank

The amount of link juice that will be passed on one's page from backlinks very much depends on the rank of that page. The higher the score, the better.

Eye10’s Backlink Checker will list the rank of each backlink, so you can see the overall quality of websites that link to your page.

Backlink Checker FAQs

Want to know more about how Backlink Checker works? Perhaps you have a question about the importance of backlinks in general for your SEO strategy?

We’ve answered the most common queries about Backlink Checker and backlinks below. If you don’t see your question, feel free to reach out, and we’ll get back to you.

What are backlinks?

Backlinks are a term that means another website is linking back to your website. Backlinks can come in many forms, including linking directly to the content of a web page or a blog.

The reason backlinks are important is that they help to give your website authority on search engines, with each credible link acting as a vote of confidence. The more backlinks your website has, the better, especially if the websites which link to your site have a high domain authority.

It’s possible to pay for backlinks, although gaining organic backlinks is preferred, especially if you have lots of backlinks originating from unique IP addresses.

When writing content for your website, it can also help the SEO-friendliness of your page to include external links, which will give other websites backlinks too. Therefore, there are lots of ways that backlinks are beneficial for any SEO strategy.

If you’re not sure what backlinks your website has, you can view a list of backlinks using Eye10’s Backlink Checker. Enter the URL of the website or web page, and a list of results will instantly be displayed. You can also see further information about the origin of the backlinks and find out more about the quality of each backlink using Backlink Monitor.

Why do I need Backlink Checker?

Just like keywords are essential for your on-page SEO, backlinks are a core part of your off-page SEO. Without enough backlinks that are of good quality, your website isn’t going to climb those search engine rankings.

Backlink Checker will instantly tell you how many backlinks your website has, allowing you to gain critical information about the origin, status, and quality of those backlinks. Without such information, it can be difficult to know where to focus your off-page SEO efforts.

As with all Eye10 tools, you’ll receive a generous amount of requests each day for backlink checks. Plus, you can even export the data too or upload it to other tools, including Backlink Monitor. It couldn’t be easier to keep track of your backlinks with Backlink Checker, which is why we were keen to include it as part of your Eye10 subscription.

We know you’ll be fascinated by the data. If you’ve never seen a complete list of your website’s backlinks, it will make for an eye-opening experience and will let you know what types of websites share your content.

How to create a backlink

It’s possible to create a backlink for another website by integrating a link in your website, which then opens that page in another tab. As noted above, creating backlinks for others is welcomed by search engines rather than only using internal links. Just be sure that the backlink leads to a reputable and credible website.

How to get backlinks?

Backlinks are the ultimate seal of approval and can do incredible things for your page ranking on search engines. So it’s no wonder backlinks are in such high demand!

Firstly, consider whether your pages are truly set up to encourage backlinks. For example, does your content have share buttons for social media platforms or email sharing? If using a website template, there should be the option to add these in. Or, if your website is custom built, you can ask your developer to add share buttons to the page. Share buttons are recommended for the likes of news articles, blog posts, or even e-commerce websites

It might sound simple, but you also need to ensure your content is something users would genuinely want to share. Websites that have been optimized for SEO and deliver what users expect to find on search engines (including a great browsing experience) are more likely to be shared than click-bait, glitchy, or generally spammy websites. When all of these aspects have been considered, you’d be surprised how many backlinks can come flooding in because your pages offer genuine benefit to others.

When structuring your content, make it interesting. The use of high-quality images, videos, sound clips, infographics, and more all add interest to the page. Contrary to lines of plain text, engaging page designs and layouts are more likely to gain views, longer page dwell times, and ultimately shares (i.e., backlinks).

It’s also possible to pay for backlinks, and while paying for backlinks is sometimes frowned upon, there are plenty of ways to do so legitimately, for example, through sponsored posts. Just be sure that the website is reputable, including having a high domain authority.

How to check backlinks?

Eye10’s Backlink Checker is an easy way to check your website’s backlinks. This includes how many backlinks your website has, the origin of your backlinks, and the status and quality of your backlinks.

Best of all, with our lowest price subscription starting at just $39/month, you don’t have to fork out a pretty penny to understand your backlinks anymore. So whether you’re just starting out with your website or trying to manage your marketing budget by calculating the ROI of your backlinks, Backlink Checker makes the entire process a breeze.

How many backlinks do I need?

The short answer is as many as you can get, especially if the backlinks originate from trusted sources and individual IP addresses.

But another factor you need to consider when calculating how many backlinks your website needs is the search difficulty of the keyword you are trying to rank for.

Search difficulty is rated on a score of 1-100. The higher the score, the more difficult that keyword is to rank for. Optimizing your on-page content is a must, but gaining those all-important backlinks for that page could just get your page over the edge when it comes to ranking above your competitors.

If an SEO keyword has a search difficulty of 10, you may need 10 backlinks to rank highly on search engines. For a search difficulty of 50, 100 backlinks would typically be required.

Always remember that the higher the search difficulty, the more backlinks will be required. This is why aiming for organic backlinks will always be an easy win. The more users share your content for free on other websites, the easier it is for your page to automatically climb the rankings.

How to increase backlinks?

Backlinks can be organic or paid. As noted above, when aiming to get more organic backlinks, you must ensure that you’re facilitating shares of your content on the actual page and that your content is of genuine interest to your users.

For paid backlinks, you can approach websites that accept sponsored content, including a backlink that links back to your website. Ensure the website is reputable and has a good domain authority score.

Another tactic that’s worth mentioning is to take a look at your page in Eye10’s Competitor Research. Here, Eye10 will ask you for your URL in relation to the keywords you are trying to target and will display your closest competitors. If other pages are ranking above you for these keywords, They are likely gaining more backlinks. So, a great exercise would be to look at these pages and see how you can improve your pages upon their offering.

Unless your webpage offers users the most helpful result, it's likely they won't receive as many shares as your competitors. So now is the time to put the work into your on-page SEO efforts to encourage your off-page SEO to flourish organically. Some aspects to consider are keyword implementation, keyword density, word count, page interactive elements, e.t.c.

Why are backlinks important?

It’s all well and good insinuating that your website offers the most helpful result for a particular set of keywords, but what does the rest of the internet think?

A backlink is a seal of approval that a website is indeed worthy of your time and energy to visit. Whether the link sends the user to a highly entertaining article or some incredibly helpful information, search engines quickly notice where users are sending other users. The more backlinks a website has, the better.

Another factor of backlinks that makes them highly prized is that they aren’t easy to acquire, especially organic backlinks from reputable sources. So when a website has a high level of organic backlinks, you can be sure the page and domain will receive a boost from search engines.

In turn, this makes it more likely the website's content will also rank highly in the future. A great example of this is a local news website that continually targets the place name of the location. If it receives lots of page views and shares of existing articles, then search engines are more likely to give that publication prominent results on search engine pages, including freshly published content.

Regardless of your website's niche, backlinks will help your website gain authority. All of which will help your pages to rank higher when users type in related search queries.

What are the attributes of a high-quality backlink?

What we know about backlinks is that they aren’t created equal. Backlinks originating from low-domain authority websites won’t pass on much link juice to your website. Likewise, some websites can harm your SEO due to their spammy nature. So, you must consider the quality of the websites supplying your backlinks when trying to gain organic or paid backlinks.

Some metrics that need to be considered when determining a quality backlink include domain authority, citation flow, trust flow, spam score, do-follow rather than no-follow. They are indexed on Google and the page's external link count (high external links can be considered spam).

Eye10’s Backlink Checker, and Backlink Monitor, will give you a thorough rundown of all the main attributes you need to look for with your current backlinks.

Can you buy backlinks?

Yes. However, buying backlinks is sometimes frowned upon, so you need to ensure the backlinks will be of high quality, i.e., the website is a trusted source.

Sponsored content or guest blogging are two legitimate ways of purchasing backlinks. An example includes writing a guest post on a website with a higher domain authority than yours in a related niche. The sponsored post should be optimized for SEO, with anchor text containing a link to your website.

If you purchase backlinks, we recommend inputting them into Eye10’s Backlink Monitor, so that you can track the performance of that backlink over time.

How to rank without backlinks

The reality is it takes time and energy to build backlinks, especially to gain them organically. So what can you do in the meantime to help your pages to rank highly on search engines?

Although Backlink Checker is an off-page SEO tool, your Eye10 subscription is packed with tools, hints, and tips to help your SEO strategy, including your on-page and technical SEO.

First and foremost, we’d suggest using our keyword and competitor-related tools to optimize your pages in line with what your users are searching for online. Plus, see the approaches your competitors use to rank above you.

If your pages have been optimized to provide real value to all those who stumble upon them, then backlinks are more likely to occur.

Things to avoid are low keyword densities, low word counts, a lack of imagery/engaging content on the page, a slow page load time, and an overall poor user experience. Look to provide helpful, enticing content on all your web pages, and the rest will soon follow.

How long does it take for backlinks to work?

It is generally considered that backlinks can take up to ten weeks to have an impact on page rankings. But this isn’t a definite rule. After all, if a piece of content goes viral, the number of backlinks the URL would receive would instantly have a positive impact on the ranking of that page.

As with all your SEO efforts, it is better to view backlinks as part of your long-term strategy rather than trying to gain instant results, as it takes time for search engines to index pages and recognize backlinks.

That’s not to say it isn’t worth trying to gain backlinks since they are essential for page ranking. But like anything, it pays to be realistic where any of your marketing efforts are concerned, especially when they will offer value over time in the case of backlinks.

Do backlinks still matter?

Yes! Search engines have always considered backlinks as an extremely important ranking factor, and there are no signs that this is about to change.

The most valuable backlinks will be those originating from quality sources, plus backlinks from unique IP addresses.

Does social media count as backlinks?

Backlinks tend to be thought of as links from websites to other websites. Many people don’t realize that social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Tik Tok, and Pinterest also count towards your backlinks.

Granted, some social media algorithms frown when external links are used because they don’t want to direct users away from their website. But, these links still get shown to the masses, and when they do, your website can easily gain a valuable amount of backlinks.

There are lots of ways to encourage backlinks through social media. Some of these ways include featuring your URL in your profile and using link shorteners to include your URL on social media posts or in comments. In addition, you can encourage shares of your URL through contests, where a share of your link in comment counts as an entry.

Pinterest is the social networking site that offers the most valuable backlinks and given it’s not the most populated platform, this may come as a surprise. Quite simply, users enjoy pinning images on boards. If your website has a Pinterest account and is visually engaging as well as SEO optimized, your content is more likely to be pinned. When this content also contains a direct link to your content, you can expect your backlinks to skyrocket organically.

How to do a backlink audit

When you take out any Eye10 subscription, you’ll receive access to various tools, including Backlink Checker and Backlink Monitor.

While Backlink Checker is geared towards uncovering the number of backlinks your website has, Backlink Monitor will give you further information about the status of your backlinks.

We recommend making full use of both our backlink tools so that you can transform your off-page SEO strategy for the better.

What is a referring domain?

A referring domain means the website sending traffic your way through a backlink.

Knowing the referring domain of any backlink is always handy to understand your visitor traffic and to ensure your domains are of high quality.

How to check if a website gives dofollow links?

Dofollow links are preferred when looking to purchase backlinks or gain organic links because they pass link juice to your page. The result means your pages are likely to rank higher.

Not all websites use dofollow links, which is why it’s worth checking in advance.

You can view the source in your browser to see if a website gives dofollow. On your browser tab, look for view>developer>view source.

A list of codes will then appear on the page. Use the Command + F function (Control + F on Windows), to bring up a search function, and type in ‘no-follow’.

If any results are highlighted, then this means no-follow links are used, which is not what we want to see.

If no results are highlighted, dofollow links are likely to be used, meaning that the website does pass on link juice to its backlinks, which is good.
